Contested by two teams of 11 players, cricket essentials involves a bowler hurling a ball at a batter, who attemps to hit the ball. From this simple premises radiates a multitude of complexities. Once considered genteel, cricket today is as hard nosed as any professional sport, and the tension that builds over a close five day test match is immense.
Players Profile
Cricket players are fast bowlers, tall and athletic. Batters require excellent hand-eye coordination and ability to make a rapid decisions. All cricketers need fast reactions and the capacity to sustain concentration for long periods.
Ball and Wicket
With a leather exterior and an interior of cork, rubber, and tightly wound string, the cricket ball is extremly hard. Although the red ball is traditional, white balls are reguarly used in limited overs matches.
The wicket consists of 3 wodden stumps and 2 wooden bails. The bails sit on the stumps in shallow grooves cut along the top of each stump. Two wickets are used in a match, one at either end of the pitch.
