Sprints

At athletis evetns it is usually the sprints:

  • 60, 100, 200 and 400 meters

 

Exploding out of the block, sprinting as fast as is possible, and then streaking across the finish line....

 

Athlete Profile

Sprinters leg muscles are highly developed to provide explosive power. the upper body is also muscular. Sharp reflexes are needed to react quikly to the starter's gun.

Running in Lanes

For all the sprints, runners must remain in their starting lane for the duration of the race. At the start of events that involve rounding one more bends, the competitors are staggered to ensure that each runner travels exactly the same distance.

Race Phases

A race can be divided into 4 phases:

 

  • Start
  • Acceleration - body leans forwards
  • Stride - full speed has been achieved
  • Finish - arms are pulled back so that the head and shoulders dip towards the finish line.
